Newsletter                   Year 2014                       Edition 9

Dear sponsor,

'Time flies' is a good saying to start this newsletter with. Time is going by so fast! And than you realize you did not make a newsletter last month. Through this newsletter we would like to make it up to you and inform you about what happened at the BeHoCa Foundation.

Volunteers/Interns
Our first intern wrote something in our last newsletter. Sadly her internship is already over and she went back to the Netherlands in July. We are so grateful for what she has achieved with the boys. Luckily Marja has been infected with the BeHoCa virus. She is now part of the board in the Netherlands, so she will continue with supporting BeHoCa. When Marja left, Shirley came for three weeks. She made the vacation period of the boy’s a very great period! She did a lot of activities with them and the kids enjoyed it very much. The last vacation was not very nice for the boy’s, but this one was perfect. Shirley raised money in the Netherlands and with this money she donated three bikes to us. Fantastic! Thank you so much. At this moment we have two interns and one volunteer. They will speak at the end of this newsletter.
The kids
Luckily the kids have decided to take it easy at this moment . They listen well, amuse themselves and have fun again. Unfortunately this happened after a few kids ran away. We now have nine kids. Every time a boy runs away you feel sorry and frustrated! Also with these boys who ran away. Especially when they come back and beg you to let them stay. But it ends somewhere. School does not accept absence, we are not a hotel and we have to focus on the kids who really are ready for it. Who are willing and ready to change. Ready for a life with structure and rules and not only freedom. Eventually it had a positive effect on the group. They suddenly revived. The bad behaviour stopped and they started to play together. The atmosphere in the house turned homy. There was laughter, playing, dancing and calmness. Because of this we also could do a lot of nice activities with them. Playback show, funny party, cheer for the Dutch soccer team, tinker, day out, games etcetera. They came from far, but we are very proud of this group! They are doing great at school as well. They speak more English every day and we receive a lot of compliments from the school, church and neighbourhood. Compliments about their behaviour, English speaking and the fact that they do not look like street kids anymore but shine! This is what we are working for! After the moving we will look at the possibility of helping more kids.
A new home
Who follows us on Facebook will probably already know. We are going to move! After a lot of problems with the landlord, a massive rais of rent and non kept promises we decided to move out. After three months of looking for a new home we have found one in a different area of Mombasa: Shanzu. Unfortunately it is further away and in a less good neighbourhood. But the house is much better and affordable. The beach is five minutes away, wich is really nice. And we signed a contract for five years. The land around the house is twice as big, which means we can expand and improve our vegetable garden. Then there will still be space left for a soccer field and, for in the future, a playground with a swing etcetera. We would like to keep some animals to generate and save money. Sadly the kids have to go to a new school. They will start at the new school in January, when the new school year starts. Until then they will still go to the current school. We are considering the options at this moment for this.

Acts and donations
Just like the two years before we attended the Effe Noar Geffen market this year in Geffen, Holland. It was a great day and we raised extra money for the foundation. We want to thank all the firms for making to lottery such a big succes with their donated presents! Thank you, thank you!! A week later we were present at the KOM festival at Rosmalen, Holland. This was the first time we were there, but certainly not the last. It was a nice market and we created more brand awareness.
The last Car Boot Sale for this season was a good success, despite the rain. Thanks to all the volunteers and especially my parents for all your help!!! We still receive money from empty plastic bottles at the supermarket in Geffen for over a year now. This is great! We want to thank you all for your support.
We also had two visitors from Australia, two ladies. They gave the boy’s an unforgettable day. The ladies organized a Pool Party at the backpackers they were staying. Children from another orphanage also joined the party. Swimming for a whole day, playing volleyball and eating and drinking. They have never slept so good as the night after this amazing and intensive, beautiful day!
Naomi, Sanne and Ad speaking
The last few weeks we had the opportunity to get to know the BeHoCa-family. The first introduction with the boys was very energetic, instructive and pleasant. We were welcomed with a very warm hart by the boys, uncles and Melissa.
We, Naomi and Sanne, are really looking forward to complete our internship here in these five months, until January. We are studying Social Work at the Avans School in ‘s Hertogenbosch. We will try our best to apply our knowledge from the education in the BeHoCa home. We would like to contribute to the development of these special boys.
I, Ad, will also help according to the mission of BeHoCa. Despite the fact that I do not have any experience with children, I expect to achieve a lot with the boys and have a lot of fun with them. I am familiar with Economics. Because of this I will help BeHoCa with the financial aspect.
We already had a great start in Mombasa and we are very excited for the remaining period in Kenya.
