Newsletter                   Year 2015                       Edition 16

Dear sponsor,

The most beautiful memories are the ones that remain forever
Since July 2013 Ali has lived with us. We saw him thrive from a street boy to a beautiful caring and helpful young man. He always wanted to help, especially in the kitchen. He had a lot of fun with the volunteers and told them everything about Kenya. He studied so hard. Late in the evening he was still doing his homework. It hurts so much to tell that Ali is not living with us any more. He changed a lot because of his accident. Unfortunately he is enormously traumatized. Sometimes, for a brief moment, we could see the old Ali with a big smile on his face. But these moments were very rare. We could not help him anymore or find payable specialized help in Kenya. We tried the best we could, but in the end the other boys suffered from this all. The ethos in the house was not good for anyone.
Ali does not want to live with us any more. He wants to live on his own, without us. Without anyone who tells him to do his exercises. Eventually we have respected Ali his choice and handed over the care of Ali to his brother.
We hope for the best for Ali and will keep an eye on him. In November there is still a surgery planned to make his elbow better. We will keep you informed about this of course.

New occupant at BeHoCa
For many of you the name Adam will sound familiar. Luckily Adam has realized that the streets are not safe anymore. They never were, but nowadays street children are being arrested by the municipality and put in jail. The purpose is to place them back with family. A prison is not a good place for a helpless child from the street! So Adam, welcome home boy! We are happy to be part of your story’s and humor again. Unfortunately we had to say goodbye to Ndiga. He was not ready yet for a life at BeHoCa.

The Shamba (vegetable garden)
The first crop was a succes, so amazing! We had coriander, okra, beans and skuma for dinner from our garden. Tomatoes, corn, (kidney) beans, spinach, lettuce, paprika and many more vegetables to be expected! It takes a lot of time. We are figuring out how to make the garden more efficient. We are also looking for a possibility to earn some money with the garden.
Holiday
Last month the boys had their holiday. It was very busy for Raj and Melissa, but thankfully they received help from volunteers Ria and Mieke. They took the boys out for a bowling night. They also baked a lot of pancakes. Besides this the boys have done a lot of other activities. The house is full of nice decorative stuff. We also had a pool party at Tulia house again. This was a wonderful day! And a quiet and calm night ;)
During the holiday Meshack and James visited the BeHoCa home. When James arrived it was just like he had never left. It was very cozy!
Jacob spend a whole week at his family. He enjoyed it very much. Yusuf, Mombasa and Meshack went into the outback for a week to visit Meshacks family. Now that they are home the appreciate variation in food, running water and a good bed much more. We should do this more often.

School
VBefore the holiday started the boys had exams again. We are thrilled to tell that Said M and Jacob were best of their class! James became second and Yusuf third. The other boys were also in the top 10. We are especially very proud of Yusuf. We can still remember that he did not speak one word English and was always last in his class. What a comeback, amazing!
After the holiday the new boys also went to school. Iddi, Tony and Evans were very nervous, maybe a bit scared as well. The were not excited at all to we woken at 5 AM. But they are doing very well at school!

Volunteers
My name is Martijn Bucher. I am an intern at BeHoCa from September until February. So I have been here for one month now. Time flies! Mostly because of all the experiences. I learn so much from working with the boys and the culture of this land. Working with the boys is so beautiful. It has made a huge impression on me how the boys are willing to change and already changed their lives so much. They come from having almost nothing! And now they don’t even complain about their homework. I can learn something from this as well haha. During my internship I hope I will be able to help the boys and I will begin a project on Positive Behavior Support.

Actions
Like the years before BeHoCa was attending Effe Noar Geffe again. It was a nice day, despite the cold weather. We raised money which we can use to fill the monthly gaps in our budget. And we could also promote BeHoCa again!
Last week the big Dam tot Damloop event started. The BeHoCa team had ten runners! They all finished! We are so proud of them. They also raised an amazing amount of money. What an accomplishment!

Thanks
Life in Kenya is not easy. We go from one problem to another problem. There is a lot of paperwork to be done. And every time the worrying about money. But despite this all the kids are doing so well. This gives me hope and extra motivation. Every day my heart melts when they come home from school and give me a hug.
But also all the help I receive from the Netherlands strengthens me. The thought of everything that is being done for BeHoCa makes me so happy. All the people who keep helping me to make my dream come true and give these boys a future! I get a powerkick out of this every time from this enormous support. Thank you so much!

I would like to thank everyone for their help! The volunteers of Effe Noar Geffe, our runner and sponsors. All the people who keep donating clothes and other useful stuff. And of course, most of all, my parents! Who arrange so much and are always ready to help BeHoCa. A huge ASANTE SANA for everyone!

See you again in the next newsletter!
Yours truly,
Melissa
