BeHoCa in Mombasa

A quick update from rainy Kenya. It rains here as well. Sometimes you can hear it coming from a distance. It can fall out of the sky this hard. We mainly have sand roads, so it is really muddy now. But that doesn’t spoil the fun!

We have found a really nice house where we can welcome and help the children. The land around it is a bit small. But for now it’s good enough. The agreement was to get the key on the 1st op June. But Hakuna Matata. Kenyan people do not know time. The 1st of June became the 15th of June. I wanted to get in the house as fast as possible, but it would have been smarter to have waited for the 1st of July. Because some work that had been done has to be done again. Sometimes I visit the office of the agent three times a week to get things arranged. Although the work is not yet complete the end is in sight!

It looks like we have found our first residents. The boys are 10, 11 and 16 years old. Next week we are going to meet them a couple of times again. We will speak with them and see if they really want to change. In addition, it is very difficult to find children. They are not at the same place as before. They are hiding. This is because Kenya has invented a new tactic to get the children off the streets. They catch every child they see on the street and place them in a kind of children’s prison. But we will try as hard as we can to find as many children as possible!

Luckily we are getting the help of a lot of volunteers in July. They will help with decorating the house, the terrace on the roof, the vegetable garden and organizing activities with the children. My little brother is coming to visit as well. He is very handy and will make couches and flower boxes.

Besides all the regular work related to the house, I am also busy with requesting for our permits. Unfortunately this is more difficult than planned. This is because many organizations have abused these permits in previous years. Since this year all rules have been tightened! But we will get there! In the beginning of July we will apply our request for the permits in Nairobi.
Kwaheri and till next time!
